Rescind CS/SB 1772 Permitting Exemptions

Senator Bracy filed SB 1772 directing the St. Johns River Water Management District to conduct environmental studies on the Little Wekiva River and prohibiting new construction permits until these studies were complete.

He then filed Committee Substitute 1 to his own bill exempting the City of Orlando from permit restrictions so it could build a water treatment plant on nearby wetlands without the appropriate environmental reviews called for in his original bill. Please join us in an effort to prevent this exemption from being enacted into law.

Send the two emails suggested below calling for measures to protect Florida wetlands, the Little Wekiva River, Florida aquifers and the St. Johns River. Feel free to edit the suggested email examples.

Action 1 – Rescind CS/SB 1772 Permitting Exemptions

Use this script in an email or phone call to Senator Bracy and to SB 1772 co-sponsosr Stewart.

Suggested Script — Thank you for filing SB 1772 – Little Wekiva River – which provides important protections for wetlands, the Florida Aquifer and the St. John’s River. However, Committee Substitute 1 adopted in the first committee hearing exempts proposed City of Orlando storm water pond projects in the Parkland District from permitting restrictions. Consequently, wetlands will be destroyed and the environmental protections you say you support will be seriously compromised.

I respectfully request that you urge Senator Mayfield to place this bill on the agenda for her next meeting of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture Environment and General Government with an Amendment to restore the bill to its original wording and intent.
